THE Puppy Project
Do Puppy Personality Tests Predict Adult Dog Behaviours?
We have already talked about the low predictive value of the puppy tests, which means that the dog’s adult behaviour can’t be really predicted from these tests. One of the main reasons is there a relatively strong environmental influence on the dog’s behaviour. The primary aim of the puppy tests’ to determine those aspects of behaviour that are under genetic influence and thus resistant to environmental disturbance.
The literature of the puppy tests is quite incomplete and there are many inconsistencies. On one hand there are only a few researches which compare the dog’s behaviour during different developmental periods. On the other hand there are reports which successfully predict the suitability for different kind of work (Scott and Bielfelt, 1976), but unfortunately the negative reports are more frequent. There also a lack of information on the predictive value of neonate tests.
In a recent comparative ethological study dogs were tested in three different developmental period, very young or neonatal (2 to 10 days of age), puppies (40 to 50 days, 6-7 weeks), and adults 1 ½ to 2 years of age. The aim of the present study was to predict the dog’s adult behaviour from early behaviour tests.
The researchers found only one correspondence between dogs’ behaviours at 6-7 weeks and 1,5-2 years during this comprehensive and conscientious work. The results showed that the puppies that engage in a lot of exploratory behaviour turned into the adults who explored their environment a lot. So we shouldn’t jump to conclusions from those behaviour tests which examine the puppies’ sociability, fearfulness and irritability.
As we have already mentioned that the puppy tests have a low predictable value, but they have a very important practical point of view, because during these tests the puppies could have gain a lot of information about their environment. The tests are also a good opportunity for the puppies to expose various physical and social experiences.
